Whiting American Rooster Hackle
This line is unique in that these birds have been selected for wide, webby, sturdy feathers with rounded tips. The stems are strong and flexable and any brittleness has been bred out.
So if you are tying and fishing streamers, saltwater, steelhead, or warmwater, the large wide feathers on these American capes and saddles are the best on the market.
All I need now are the hooks!
Cape or Saddle - What's the difference?
Cape Feathers
The cape feather is the one on the right. These neck feathers are long, wide and webby and have a nice round tip. The stem is strong, so strong that the feathers hold their shape when tied in as a streamer.
The fibers on these feathers are tough, able to hold up to the rigors of saltwater. The perfect feather for tying tarpon flies. As you can see in the picture, the stem has a distinct curve making a favorite for bass bug and deceiver patterns.
Saddles Feathers
Saddles are different. The stem is not nearly as stiff and as you can see from the picture on the right, there is a wider range of feathers on a saddle.
The feathers on the upper half of the saddle have more bugger quality. Perfect for palmering around a hook, the fibers will give you movement in the water. Look at the picture on the far right. I bent the feather to show the long fibers mixed with some web.
For larger bugger, throats on flies, bodies on warm water patterns, these are a favorite
The feathers on the lower half of the saaddle are long, wide, and webby. They are more like schlappen feathers, wall to wall web. Three quarters of these feathers measure 5" and longer.
Dr. Whiting has perfected this line to the point where there is little difference from one cape or saddle to the next. However, if you would like to see the exact one you're buying, please contact me and I'll send you images of all available in the colors you want so you can select the one you like.

Tying with Whiting American Rooster Saddles
If you're looking for wide webby feathers, you can't find anything better than the feathers on these saddles. These are the widest feathers on the bird, the web goes clear to the edge of the feather.
Over half of the feathers on these saddles are over 4 inches long. They are perfect for tying large buggers, leeches, and teasers for the surf angers. By far, the best selling color is white, and the feathers on these saddles are paper-white.
Here you will find a wide selection of vibrant bright colors dyed over white, grizzly, badger, and laced feather patterns. The feathers are long and the stems have more flexability than a feather from a cape.
Perfect for medium to large streamers, these feathers hold their shape in water. And unlike dry fly feathers, these feathers have quite a bit of tapper. So if you're tying small flatwing patterns, decievers, or steelhead patterns, these are a must.
