Feathers for Muskie Flies

Good schlappen is hard to find. These beautiful long flowing feathers are the tail coverts on a rooster - the feathers between the shorter rump feathers and the stiff tail feathers.

Dyed these feathers are great for tying musky and saltwater flys. Here you will find a wide range of natural colors as well as bright colors - beautiful colors dyed on white and grizzly.

Tying Muskie Flies with Whiting Schlappen Feathers

Fly fishing for big musky is one of the fastest growing areas in fly fishing. Robert Tomes' book Muskie on the Fly is one of the best books out there and captured the attention of many who have only thought of going after these giants.

These beautiful long flowing flies are easy to tie. Just feathers and deer tail. The feathers are long, wide and webby. Schlappen are the feathers just before the tail on a Whiting rooster.

Some tiers mix in wide saddle feathers. The stem on these feathers are far more flexible giving the fly movement in the water. They are not as wide but just as webby.
