Dry Fly Hackle

Take a close look at this feather. What makes it so special? Barb density and stiffness, feather symetry, and stem shape, are just a few criteria.

The barb density is so incredable that when I bend it, the barbs hardly seperate. Years ago, you needed 2 feathers to hackle a dry fly. Today, you need no more than 2 to 3 turns from a single feather.

At first glance, these feathers may seem expensive. But considering that it took over 50 years of intense selection preasure to reach this level of perfection... well you be the judge.

Tips... Rooster Cape or Rooster Saddle?

dry fly hackleWhen deciding whether to buy a dry fly cape or saddle there are a few things to first consider. First, what sizes are you planning to tie? With a good rooster cape you can tie sizes 6 to 26. Rooster saddles on the other hand have a very narrow size range, usually just two or three. The feathers are long and narrow and you can easily tie six or seven flies of the same size from just one feather.

Dry flies need good strong tails and dry fly capes have great tailing fibers along the edges of the cape. These are the feathers that would be on the throat of the rooster. They are called spade hackle and have the strongest fibers, feathers needed to protect the throat from the sharp spurs of other roosters.

So if you're just getting started, I recommend capes. Once you settle in on your favorite flies to fish, buy dry fly saddles or 100 packs in those sizes and colors. That way you keep your rooster capes looking nice for tying a variety of sizes of your favorites as well as some new patterns.

T.U. Starter Kit

Many Trout Unlimited clubs offer fly tying classes for beginners just starting out.

Years ago I took those classes and besides learning a lot, had a great time.

The first fly we tied was a woolly bugger then moved on to dry fly patterns like adams and blue winged olives.

Back then a size 12 seem tiny, and finding good hackle at an affordable price was impossible. I couldn't afford a $60 neck.

I'm offering these 1/2 capes at an affordable price so that beginers have a chance to learn with the best dry fly hackle on the market.

Grizzly and brown are the colors most called for in dry fly patterns, followed by dun, then black, and cream.

And if you're just getting started, start with capes. They have hook sizes ranging from 10's to 20's and tailing fibers on the outer edge

Fly tying is a fun hobby, don't compromise on the quality of your feathers.

Mayfly Winger feathers 4 for $15.00

Mayfly Winger Feathers

Many people ask "what is the best feather to use for tying wings on my dry flies?"

Years ago, tyers were able to use hen necks. However, with hackle growers breeding for smaller and smaller hackle sizes, today these feathers are too narrow and "dry-fly" like.

Well, here is a feather that works well; nice barring, web right up to the edge, and nice round tips - all making for the perfect silhouette on the water.

There are far too many colors and sizes that I offer to list them all in a shopping cart here. To see pictures of all the colors, please visit my page; Mayfly Winger Feathers.
