Satyr Tragopan

Just before daylight, amid the narrow gorges covered with overarching tangles of bamboo, outjutting boulders, and forests of rhododendron and magnolias, the heartrendering wail of a male satyr wah! waah! oo-ah!oo-aaaaah! lets you know it's breeding season. Seeing him is almost impossible, still perched high in the branches, he blends in perfectly with the scarlet petals of rhododendron blossoms that fill the hills of his Himalayas mountain paradise.

Tying with Satyr Tragopan Feathers

This spotted red pheasant offers a wide variety of uses for artistic salmon flies
using feathers not only for sides, cheeks and wings but for cheeks on streamer and steelhead patterns. The red breast feathers without the eyes make great throats.

Eyed body feathers

These eyed feathers are from the neck and breast of the male. The important thing to look for is a nice round white eye boardered with black. If it's more tear-drop shaped than round, it's most likely crossed with Temmink's.

They range in size, some eyes only the size of dotts as in the pair in the sidebar. The feathers closest to the head are pure red.

Eyed body feathers - part olive

The feathers on the shoulders and back begin to show signs of olive. The further down the back, the more olive and barring in the pattern. These feather still have the nice round white eyes.

Full Skin

This is a 4 year old male in full feather. The wings and tail have some damage and there are a few chipped feathers around the neck. But all in all, I would say it's in good shape.

Full Skin

The eyes on this skin are perfect. White with a nice black boarder and perfectly shaped.

This is a very nice skin, the head might be missing, but most of the small red neck feathers are still there.

The only thing I don't like on this skin is that the olive feathers on the back are a bit light, but as with all birds, Satyrs do vary a bit in color.

Hen Skin

This is a perfect hen skin, it is in full feather, no chipping or damaged feathers. It's a large skin for a hen.
