Northern Pintail

Locally known as dafai, or the bird of nine colors, this is the national bird of Nepal and is found in the high altitudes of the Hymalayas , inhabiting the rocky crags and gorges up near the tree line. Winters are brutal and they typically forage in small groups digging for tubers on the icey slopes. When the sun shines, the reflection off the matalic feathers of males blends in with the

Tying with Northern Pintail Feathers

Barred and colored similarly to teal, the Pintail has classically been used for veilings both tails and wing sides.

The fact that it marries well with other wing materials makes it popular. The Pryce-Tannatt Jock Scott salmon fly calls for married strips of pintail and wood duck for sides. Pintail tends to be longer fibered than teal making it useful for strip wing spey flies.

The “elver” feathers, those sword shaped feather off of the back, have been used as wings for many streamer smelt patterns.
